.history.
Catriona was born to a pair of mages in Taln, the capital city of Kilia. Her family was fairly large, and all Kilian: even her grandparents and distant cousins lived close enough that visiting on the weekends was a longtime family activity as she grew up. Being the youngest in a large extended family meant not only that she became an aunt early on in her life, but also that, while she wasn't exactly ignored, she wasn't exactly spoiled, either. She had plenty of time to spend by herself, and plenty of ways to spend that time.
She spent it reading books, often about great inventors of the past or great leaders, or myths and fairytales, and soon grew into an insatiable thirst for knowledge. She devoured books as easily as food, especially nonfiction books and stories from history. What started out as a desire to learn developed into a desire to create, and she started doing sketches of odd ideas that came to her -- a plumbing system for indoor areas, which still needed a lot of work, a way to cool water quickly that also needed a lot of work. She channeled everything she knew about magic, and everything she knew about history, into everything she knew about the natural world, and came out with some rather interesting ideas.
While she'd surprisingly never had that much talent at magic, which disappointed every one of her relatives, the way she applied what she did know became more impressive year by year. Her ideas were bright, new, nothing they'd heard of before. The tragic side effect that came with them is that... well, usually, they didn't tend to work out very well. Several of them blew up midway through the trial run, and Catriona was often sent back to the drawing board. Several ideas were crumpled up and tossed into the trash, and Catriona drew up new ideas in their place.
The few inventions that did go well gained her small bits of respect, invention by invention, and Catriona began to think that hey, if she could keep this up, maybe one of the clerics would notice -- maybe even Lord Athiarne, whom she had idolized since she was a girl.
.personality.
Catriona is cheerful and upbeat about everything, from her newest invention to the sunrise and sunset. People notice her energy, and she seems to rub off on other people; there's rarely a time that she's in a room without at least someone smiling, though admittedly that may be because she's so remarkably eccentric that people can't help but laugh at her.
And eccentric is possibly the best word to describe her, actually -- she's always got some odd idea or another in her head, from one invention to the next, though very few of said inventions ever turn out correctly. She's bright and creative, of course, but the way she applies these virtues of hers is just so atypical and odd that the rest of her family isn't quite sure what to do with her.
She's also remarkably absentminded; whether talking or writing, she has a tendency to either trail off or go into remarkable mumbo-jumbo that she's forgotten that not everyone understands. She forgets -- or maybe she just doesn't realize -- that not everyone's mind works the same way as hers does, and as such tends to go off on tangents that only she understands without realizing it's a tangent in the first place.
She has high hopes both for the world and for the future, and deeply believes that people are by nature good, and just happen to make a lot of mistakes during their lives. She's also confident that everyone can get what they want if they work hard enough, regardless of their skill levels or their individual talents. It's this idea which has made her positive that one day, she'll be working under Lord Athiarne. She does work very hard, after all, and she's extremely creative.
She is, however, less than a social butterfly, as she once again doesn't realize how her behavior might irritate other people. Loud, outgoing, and friendly are nice ways to describe it; annoying, pesky, and persistent are less-kind ones. She's constantly bugging people to help her put something together, to look over some plans for her, to help her try out her newest creation, and with the frequency of her failures, she's alienated quite a few people when her projects have exploded in their faces.
.appearance.
Catriona has long, dark hair that she ties into a braid to keep it out of her eyes. She has large, round blue eyes, and a childish countenance that often makes people think she's younger than she actually is. Along with her oft-absentminded expression, she tends to wear clothing that others will think looks kind of odd or out-of-place. Catriona dresses in outfits that she finds give her the most freedom of movement, no matter how odd the clothes look or how patched up they are, or even what materials they're made from. She tends to be very excitable even in presence, rocking up and down on the balls of her feet whenever she speaks, and can even make people dizzy just by talking to her, since she has a constant need to be moving or doing something.
